Since Oprah featured acai on her popular show in the US, many companies started using her name on their products. And whilst she praises the health benefits of the acai berry Oprah doesn't want to be associated with just any old company that decides to use her name.
Since the furore over the acai berry Oprah and Dr. Oz have settled with at least three of the 50 companies the television hosts sued for using their names and images to promote the acai berry juice.
Oprah Winfrey and Mehmet Oz, a medical doctor who appears frequently on her talk show have settled the dispute with acai producers MonaVie.
Some Acai berry products sold online can mislead consumers, resulting in 10,000 complaints in the last two years.
Acai is a superfruit grown in Brazil, known for its many health benefits. It is exported and sold in a capsule, powder or juice form. Much of the acai berry juice products are distributed through the Web.
However, in many of the reported complaints, customers actually said that they thought they could trust the company more because Oprah or Dr. Oz endorsed the product, according to the Better Business Bureau officials.
Marc Rachman, a New York attorney who represents Oprah and Dr. Oz and their companies, confirmed the settlements. Oprah and Dr. Oz hope to reach agreements with the other companies involved in the lawsuit, Rachman said.
So while the acai berry Oprah did wonders to raise the profile of this amazing fruit, it seems that she was sick of having her image and name used on many products that she just didn't endorse. And rightly so!
